A modern masterpiece.

Paul Thomas Anderson's stylish and compelling take on the 70s porn industry follows Eddie Adams, aka Dirk Diggler (Mark Wahlberg), through six years of sex, drugs and disco. His chance meeting with pornography director Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds) starts his career as one of the greatest adult actors of the time. Dirk's character is based on real-life porn actor John Holmes, who, like Dirk, was renowned for being extremely "well-endowed". This is where Dirk finds initial success.

The main themes in Boogie Nights are the obvious ones relating to a film of this genre; pornography, drugs, sex, betrayal, violence and music. Boogie Nights deals with the pornography theme with some control. It is not overplayed and the sex scenes are surprisingly minimal, but mentally explicit when they take place on screen.

Throughout the film cocaine is abused enormously, and the film's setting, Los Angeles 1977-1983, reflects the popularity of the drug at that time, which the film captures perfectly. However, Boogie Nights does not promote cocaine, as there are some scenes involving addiction and overdoses. For example at Jack's party, they find a girl who has recently, and graphically, overdosed; blood pours from her nose and she begins an unconscious fit. The film, before this scenes, has been fairly upbeat and comic, but from this point it foreshadows the darkness that it will occur.

The music scenes are executed brilliantly, from superbly-staged disco scenes to a down-and-out Dirk singing terribly in his new music career. The soundtrack too is excellent, featuring tunes from The Emotions, ELO, The Beach Boys and the unforgettable Sound Experience. The standout scene in the whole film comes down to the music; Dirk, Redd Rothchild (John C. Reilly) and Todd Parker (Thomas Jane) visit drug dealer Rahad Jackson's (Alfred Molina) house in order to make some quick cash from selling phoney drugs, but Night Ranger's Sister Christian, which is playing in the background, increases the intensity of the scene incredibly, proving that music can bring so much more depth to a scene. Boogie Nights is filled with those kind of scenes, which makes the film even more fantastic.

The standout performance in Boogie Nights is Burt Reynolds as the enigmatic, yet moody, film director. In the scene where he attacks a young guy for slating his movies, it is a complete shock for the audience, because before this point he has been pretty mellow and content. Other notable performances are Julianne Moore, Heather Graham as the beautiful Rollergirl, John C. Reilly, and Mark Wahlberg, who delivers the performance of his career.

Boogie Nights is also a surprisingly original film, using common themes but filmed in its own sharp and realistic way. Anderson's approach has been fully captures these characters in a time when nothing seemed to be going wrong, or at least until the 80s arrive. From then on, things turn very dark indeed, and all signs of the recognisable characters and situations from the first part of the film have gone. This does not, however, reduce the high level of engaging entertainment that this film offers.

Boogie Nights was not a box-office success, earning only £2 million at cinemas in the UK. But this is not the film's, or the director's concern. Anderson recognises quality, not popularity, which is evident in his three other films, Hard Eight, Magnolia and Punch-Drunk Love. I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys a simple parable filled with excellent and variable situations, because at the end of this film you will realize that Boogie Nights is a simple morality tale, but one which will stay in the mind days after you watch it. Boogie Nights is at once shocking, hilarious, devastating and both visually and audibly outstanding.

Photographer Spencer Tunick travels the U.S. in search of volunteers to pose nude for his outlaw photo-shoots, all of them done out in public and often without legal permits. This documentray chronicles Tunick's logistic nightmares, his brushes with the law, and the free-spirit-volunteers who discard their inhibitions for his artistic vision, and their own personal concepts of self-gratification.

One of THE most delightful, entertaining and informative films of an artist at work. Spencer Tunick travels to most of the United States to portray people by one's, by ten's, by hundred's in their natural states.

Instead of showing an artist in angst, this film shows the artist at work and reveals the surprisingly happy effect of his efforts on the people he portrays.

As far removed from Hollywood and films about Jackson Pollock and Vincent Van Gogh and Michelangelo as Spencer's vision is from conventional notions about what art does and who it's for.

Starts slow and tentative and builds to a glorious and satisfying ending. Great pacing and direction put this on a straight track to documentary perfection.

Especially surprising was the segment that reveals Spencer's troubles with --and distaste for.......NUDISTS! They're a real pain in the ass to work with.

Nothing in the film draws attention to the making of the film. There's no didacticism here, but by the end of the film I was ready to take off my clothes and find Spencer.

HBO showed it but if they don't show it again, find it and rent it..... the legacy of Woodstock come to small-town America.

Although quiet and unassuming, Spencer's as bold as his subjects when he goes up to total strangers and persuades them to undress for art's sake.

And yes, he's been arrested, but never on a citizen complaint.....just by cops who can't stand the thought of people not wearing clothes in public. Bravo, Spencer!

Initially written over a brief incarceration period at La Bastille and continuously expanded and improved upon throughout the rest of a life predominantly spent inside various penal and mental institutions, Justine or the Misfortunes of Virtue remains the signature work by the nowadays rarely read if routinely referred to by all and sundry Donatien Alphonse François de Sade. The nominal nobility that came with the title of Marquis by which he's most commonly identified casts a cruelly ironic shadow against the blinding light of the knee jerk treatment afforded him by authorities fearful of the consequences his anarchist free spirit might have on society, "protecting" then as now the lower classes allegedly unable to distinguish between artistic license and lewd licentiousness punishable by law. Frequently filmed with varying degrees of success and fidelity to its source, Sade received what must rank as one of his finest cinematic adaptations from what must have seemed like the unlikeliest of quarters at a time the author - along with many of his once banned be-lettered brethren like John Cleland and David Herbert Lawrence - was in the process of being publicly and proudly reclaimed by the Literati.

Even prior to a long and fruitful career in hardcore carnality, female pseudonyms like "Andrée Marchand" or "Caroline Joyce" indicating the inspiration his wife and collaborator Huguette Boisvert brought to this casually considered as most misogynist of genres, the late Claude Pierson wasn't exactly held in high esteem by the middle classes tendentiously pandered to by the newspapers of France, a country desperately clinging to an elsewhere rapidly eroding caste system. Perhaps the experience of being ostracized by polite society, and I use the term loosely, forged a spiritual bond between the maligned movie maker and his pen to paper predecessor. Whatever the case may be, his (or should that be "their" ?) JUSTINE DE SADE stands as one of preciously few films worthy of openly aligning itself with its notorious author, faithful in both letter and spirit and therefore ironically if inevitably a tad turgid going for the average adult audience trawling for titillatory thrills.

Retaining Sade's narrative structure, the movie introduces Justine (soft porn superstar Alice Arno unveiling untapped resources of insidious irony) as a convict on her way to the gallows whose sorry fate touches the heart of kept woman Juliette (France Verdier) who has amassed a small fortune by embracing vice as enthusiastically as our constantly beleaguered heroine did virtue. Calling herself "Thérèse" to suppress the shame, she tells her tale of woe and abuse at the hands of just about everyone she met, her mantra of being "a poor orphan girl, well-acquainted with vice since the age of 12" serving as more of aphrodisiac than deterrent. More pious than the people of the cloth, whose hypocrisy the writer delighted in exposing practically centuries before the general public was to grudgingly concur, Justine only yearns to do the right thing, protect the meek and downtrodden and hopefully keep her maidenhead in the process yet that's not exactly the way of the world.

Film's episodic structure emulates novel's feverish chapters but may wear some viewers down as Justine basically suffers one outrageous indignity after another. Names, faces and social status of the inflicting instigators (aristocrats, a congregation of monks, a band of thieves) may change but the situation stays the same with Justine pragmatically forced to "adjust" her attitude accordingly while, to her mind at least, preserving her cherished purity of heart if not body. Far better acted by a cast of second tier semi-respectability - usually supporting players in mainstream cinema - than most similar sexploitation offerings of the period, the movie's literally held together by Arno's stunning turn, making one regret the strictly decorative purposes she has been limited to on other occasions. Watch for her real life sister Chantal Broquet, an engaging if more low key erotic actress in her own right, as the frail countess weary of her perverted husband's lust for bloodletting, a rare chance to see both siblings in simulated orgy action. Chief among tech credits is the glowing cinematography by Jean-Jacques Tarbès, a seasoned professional who experienced no difficulty juggling jobs on "acceptable" flicks (shooting most of Continental king of comedy Claude Zidi's efforts) with more disreputable fare, his clearly cordial relationship with Pierson extending to his actually working on several of the director's explicit endeavors like CHALEURS INTIMES and EXTASES IMPUDIQUES ! For the record, this is also one of rare adaptations to retain Justine's original ironic fate, the author's final slap in the face of society slaving to keep its underlings in line through enforcement of the erroneous belief that virtue reap rewards, in this life or the next.

Director Ferzan Ozpetek sets his film Harem suaré (Last Harem) in the twilight days of the Ottoman Empire. The story revolves around Safiye (Marie Gillian), a harem dweller who was sold to the Sultan at age 8. Many of the women in the harem have yet to gain the aging Sultan’s attentions, and Safiye is one of the women who have not yet been chosen. Following an incident, Safiye gains the Sultan’s eye. He asks her name, and suddenly she is one of the favoured ones–this boils down to a night (or more) with the Sultan. If the union is fruitful, and a harem dweller bears a child, then this increases her stature in the community. She will earns jewels from the Sultan, and great envy and possibly even death from her many rivals ….

Story-telling is at the heart of Harem suaré, and this method of narration creates a languid timelessness and wonder–while also adding some confusing elements to the tale. One tale of harem life is told by the slave, Gulfidan (Serra Yilmaz) to a room full of harem dwellers. Gulfidan relates the story of Safiye’s rise in the harem, and her forbidden relationship with the eunuch, Nadir (Alex Descas). Other, fragmented sections of the film are composed of a now-aged Safiye (Lucia Bose) telling her story to Anita (Valeria Golina), a distraught Italian woman, as the two women wait in a train station for their respective trains to take them to their destinations. These two stories weave back and forth allowing the viewer to piece together the final tale. However, some viewers may be confused by some of the time elements–especially in the aging of Gulfidan. Gulfidan is Safiye’s maidservant, and she tells Safiye’s story to a room full of harem women long after the harem system has been disbanded. One should accept this impossibility as a device to illustrate the timelessness of a mystical conundrum.

Harem suaré is an exotic tale that exposes the incredible decadence and cruelty of a despotic system. The settings are breathtakingly beautiful, lush, and sensual. The story is tragic, and it conveys with a magnificent irony, the fate of the women who were selected for their unique talent and beauty but discarded when they ceased to be useful. The director’s subtle analogy to the fate of the harem women against the fate of the stray dogs of Istanbul is loaded with pathos. This is an absolutely stunning film, and by far my favourite Ozpetek film to date. The film is in Italian, Turkish, and French with English subtitles. Note to Ozpetek fans–the character, Anita is also the owner of the haman in Steam.

What started out as a massive, haunting and disturbing look at the corruption of bureaucracy ended up as a mere flesh flick, consisting mainly of outtakes and only two types of opinions from the viewers; "this movie is crap" and the infamous "I love the sex in that movie! It gives an erection every time I see it." All of these travesties, and more, are a major insult to the many talents involved in this production of "Caligula."

From what one can tell, it would have been an excellent film. Malcolm McDowell gives a performance of a lifetime, portraying an Emperor whose dedication to exposing the senate for what they are, a corrupt bunch of spineless bastards, ultimately leads to his descend into madness. Helen Mirren gives an interesting performance as Caligula's seductive wife, Caesonia and Teresa Ann Savoy is great as the cute and sweet Drusilla, the only voice of reason in the time of madness. The supporting cast is also top notch. Sire John Gielgud gives an awesome portrayal a stoic Roman aristocrat Nerva and Peter O'Toole is a true jaw dropper as Tiberius, the old emperor, a completely mad sex addict, plagued with syphilitic lesions. The rest of the supporting cast are unknown Italian actors, except for the B-movie god John Steiner, who plays the two faced Longinus, Caligula's treasurer.

The much talked about sex in the film was never meant to be in any way arousing. If one looks closely, he can see that most of the nudity and sex is handled in a very clinical, unappealing fashion. Tinto Brass did an awesome job showing how the Ancient Rome was so used to perversity, that a few people romping in a corner was just not a big deal in those days. Same can be said about the gore and violence in the film.

From the small hints remaining in the film, "Caligula" was well on its way to become a moody piece of paranoia, corruption and deep character study. There are some truly chilling and atmospheric moments. For example, when Caligula puts on the royal ring, you can actually see him losing soul, thanks to Malcolm McDowell's awesome facial expressions. Also, there is a haunting scene of Caligula asking the dying Nerva, who lies in a bath tub filled with blood, about the afterlife. And the humorous scenes of Caligula "judging" a land dispute between two whiny senators and one where a Senator says he would give up his life to cure Caligula's to fever, only to realize that Caligula has excepted his proposition.

But sadly, none of the points I made can be seen to a naked eye. When Tinto Brass got fired, the film's producer, Bob Guccione (yes, *that* Bob Guccione), tried to splice the film together himself, although he had no idea what he was doing. What ended up was a pathetic mishmash of truncated and misplaced scenes, out takes, rehearsal footage and some dull extra sex inserts with the Penthouse Pets, shot by Bob himself after the filming has wrapped, designed simply to promote the magazine. All the important subplots and story lines were deleted, making the film lose most of its plot and meaning, the pace is ruined due to endless pauses and there are maddening zooms that are obviously just raw footage of camera operators adjusting the lens. The movie is simply unwatchable because it is mostly cut together from the blurry, shaky outtakes. In other words, Bob Guccione stole a masterpiece and turned it into his own little wet dream.

Everyone who dealt with this film disowned it after seeing the finished result and rightfully so.

So, next time you watch the film and notice how bad it is, don't blame the actors, Tinto Brass or Gore Vidal. Blame Bob Guccione and the botched editing.

The uncompromising director Věra Chytilová, well-known for her harshly mocking attacks on people''s failings and foibles, has created a new filmic parable on human weakness with Vyhnání z ráje (Expulsion from Paradise, 2001), her most recent film. Although fully within the Chytilová tradition of biting moral fable, the film has had a lukewarm reception from Czech and international critics.

The main story of Vyhnání z ráje concerns Rosta, a film director (Bolek Polívka), who is shooting a film at a nudist beach.[2] Everyone in the film crew has different ideas about the genre and style of the film being shot: The director tries to create an artistic work, an experimental metaphor about Adam and Eve; the Russian producer Igor (Milan Šteindler) hopes to see an erotic lovestory produced; and the screenwriter (played by theatre director and dramatist J A Pitínský) aims to express his positive philosophy about humanity through the film.

The fictive film within the film is called Paradiso, but it seems more like a hell than paradise. Monstrous naked bodies lie on the beach as if in a tableau from the apocalypse. We watch the director in a state of personal crisis. He experiences misunderstandings with his wife (played by French actress and Polívka''s ex-wife Chantal Poullain) and also complications in the relationship with his lover (who is the daughter of Paradiso''s producer and also happens to be the film''s lead actress). The respective stories of each character in Vyhnání z ráje do not add up to a coherent unit but rather make up a mosaic that Chytilová uses to create a picture of moral decline.

Everything is different, everything is naked... and open.

This movie involves many hidden layers. It is basically a philosophical movie, staged at the least philosophical environment imaginable: A closed scenery of a nudist spot, where some hired Czech stuff is making a plain erotic movie for a rich Russian producer. Nothing in this movie is what it seems to be at the first superficial glance. The story is just a patsy. Naked relationships and sampled philosophies of all those people are symbolized by all those naked people themselves. It is rather a movie how to make some sense out of a nonsense. About boundaries, differences and similarities between reality and staged pseudo-reality. Everything culminates in last climactic scenes, when neither directors nor actors and viewers are sure if the death is real or just a part of the movie plot. A key to the whole story is perhaps in its very last sentence: "When I imagine that this Earth is flying in the Universe ... those people are perhaps not even realizing that..."

At present, it is a very underrated movie by Věra Chytilová, which probably will be more appreciated only after some time. It is a symbolic movie, made paradoxically by a highly non-symbolic and realistic method. It is a complicated and provoking intellectual movie, definitely not recommended to those who are seeking just some erotic stuff or plain action movie. It obviously also involves some tangible biographical and personal elements and internal fights of Boleslav Polívka (one of writers and the major protagonist) and Věra Chytilová herself.
